Welcome to Freiberg
Freiberg is located in the east of Germany and in the center of the Free State of Saxony. The city of Freiberg was founded in 1162 and has been the historic center of the mining industry in the ore mountains region. The silver mining in the region of Freiberg, which began in the 11th century, shaped the face of the city and attracts visitors from all over the world today.

Freiberg impresses with its best-preserved, medieval town center with a wide range of outstanding buildings such as the Cathedral of St. Mary including the Golden Portal from 1225 and two organs, built by Gottfried Silbermann, or the Freudenstein Castle which houses the Saxon mining archive and the mineralogical collection „terra mineralia“ with more than 3.500 minerals. The tradition of mining can be discovered by a tour through “The Rich Ore Mine” (“Reiche Zeche”), open to visitors.
Once marked by mining activities, Freiberg is nowadays shaped by a fundamental structural change towards a technological location of semiconductor materials applications and solar technology. And so the university town of Freiberg combines tradition with modernity in a fascinating way.
Integral part of its mining heritage is the oldest University of Mining and Metallurgy in the world, often just known as The TU Bergakademie Freiberg, which was founded in 1765. In 2015, the TU Bergakademie Freiberg celebrates its 250th anniversary with numerous festivities. We would like to invite you to join us during the anniversary year. Alte Mensa

The conference will take place in the hall of ‚Alte Mensa‘ that is traditionally used for academic events of the university. It offers sufficient seating for up to 300 guests and additional rooms for exhibitions and catering.
The ‚Alte Mensa‘ enjoys a central location in the city center of Freiberg, just a step away from countless attractions. All sights are within easy walking distance – including the cathedral St. Mary, the ‚terra mineralia‘ exhibition and many more.
Directions
Freiberg can be reached via the International airports of Dresden or Leipzig. Train connections in both directions are available on an hourly basis.
